A Few Hours in Melbourne, Australia

A Few Hours in Melbourne, Australia

As a Sydneysider of 44 years who finally moved to Melbourne, I’m frequently asked by my Sydney friends – WHY?!!! LOL.

Of course, they’re outdoorsy people who love sunshine, beaches, heat, and being able to go out every day. I’m an indoorsy person who likes to avoid sunshine, beaches and heat, and much prefer to stay inside somewhere every day. Chalk and cheese, really.

So, for me, with so much to do in Melbourne at night, (hiding from that ball of terminal radiation) I’m much happier here than I have ever been in Sydney. Don’t come to Melbourne for the weather, come for the friendly people, great bars and nightlife, public transport and spaces, creative areas, and a lot more besides!

The second question they usually ask is “Alright, you’ve convinced me. I’ll be in Melbourne for a few hours. What can I do there?”

As my dad was planning a visit, I put together a quick list for him to choose from. I thought I’d share it with you, if you’re passing through Melbourne, or here on a business trip and have a few hours to spare.

1. Free old tram ride (circular trip around the city and docklands) 1h – Several different ones. If the automatic tour recording doesn’t work on the one you get on, get off and get the next one! Just available during the daytime.

2. Federation Square facade (interesting looking building) 10 mins

3. Graffiti street 10 mins (Hosier Lane and Rutledge Lane)

4. Flinders Street Station 10 mins (Great looking entrance on the corner)

5. Old Church opposite Flinders Station 15 mins (donation)

6. Coop’s Shot Tower Melbourne Central 10 mins to look

or 30 minutes look inside (fee?) + Melbourne Central Clock display on the hour

7. Gog and Magog at Royal Arcade (Bourke Street mall) 10 mins

8. Botanic Gardens, flower clock, shrine of remembrance (if there’s time. It’s a long walk!) 1h

9. After dark: Yarra River + Bridges + Gas Brigades on the hour from 8pm 30 mins (mostly during summer)

10. Looking at QV Markets (some overpriced stalls, a bit like Paddy’s in Sydney) 30 mins

11. St Kilda beach pier – half an hour by tram from the CBD.

12. Exploring the city. Little bits of artwork everywhere. Walking, and taking a tram to see the library, RMIT building, colourful facades etc. Even Southern Cross Station and Town Hall are great to see. 2hs

13. National Gallery of Victoria 180 St Kilda Road (5h)

Plus, Docklands area. Nice views of the water on a good day.

If you like heights, there is a ferris wheel, though a bit pricey. Get a Groupon deal if possible.

South Wharf – lots of great restaurants and bars. Aim for Happy Hour first (4pm to 6pm most places) then stay if you have extra $!

Also
Riverland Bar Federation Square (river and gardens view)
Beer Deluxe (Craft Beer)
Cafes on Lygon Street (Coffee etc!)
Rooftop Bar 252 Swanston Street (Haven’t been there yet but good reviews – Major weekend crowds)

Coffee tasting places…

So, these are just the basics. You could live in Melbourne for years and still not have enough time to do everything.

Cheers!
