We walked down Elizabeth Street to avoid much of the crowds but still took a quick detour to near Customs House for one of the geometric displays.
The queue was at least half an hour long just to look at some mirrors inside a geometric shape so we decided to avoid it, go back the way we came and get to The Opera House that way.
The Opera House Vivid Sydney display was different to last year. Last year’s was basically images in the shape of the Opera House with some creative animation, but still showing the geometric structure of the House in the feel of the images. This year it was simply a video projected onto the sails in shapes.
More dynamic perhaps but less interesting. I’m not so into simply broadcasting videos onto buildings.
You could use a projector screen instead! It’s a lot more interesting if the film is designed specifically for the idea of the building it is going to be displayed on and the shape, structure and architecture is incorporated into the image. There were a few images on the side of the Opera House that reflected the House itself but it was mainly little story vignettes that could have been projected onto any slightly triangular shape.
Even so, personal preferences aside, what was shown was very beautiful and full of colours and effects so I’m sure many would have enjoyed watching it.
We decided to avoid the crowds on the way back and took a short cut through the rocks walk which leads up to the Cahill express way.
Not as many people here as only the locals really know about the location, and the only way there is to ascend to the Harbour Bridge on one side or take the long flight of steps up from Elizabeth Street.
As I hadn’t been on this part of the expressway before, my partner and I were very happy with the amazing view. Certainly a camera cannot do it justice. Go to my final Vivid Sydney post to view the video.
We didn’t explore the rest of the Rocks displays this time. Far too many people. Zoom into the picture above to see some of them. Perhaps next year near the start of the festival.
