Harts Pub in The Rocks in Sydney is one of those hidden gems that many Sydney residents hold dearly in their hearts. While fantastic restaurants, pubs and bars have continued to arise, such as Quarryman’s in Pyrmont, The Local Taphouse in Darlinghurst, or Keg and Brew in Surry Hills, Harts Pub remains a perennial favourite.

Celebrating 6 years on the craft beer scene, and owned by The Rocks Brewing Co, you’ll see a lot of their beers on tap, amongst other things. Of course, wine and spirits are available.

Harts Pub nowadays is more of a gateway craft beer place. It’s where you take your friends, that think Guinness or Stella are craft beers, to taste what is considered by the media as real craft beer, before taking them elsewhere to try what people now REALLY think is REAL craft beer, such as wasabi, chilli, bacon, oyster, coffee or chocolate beer!

Unfortunately, the beers don’t change that often. If you’re like me and check the Now Tapped craft beer app for updates every few hours to see what new beers have appeared in various craft beer bars around Sydney, then the seldom changing craft beer menu at Harts may be a bit disappointing. But if you’re a creature of habit and prefer to find a beer you like and only drink that one for a few months, then Harts might be the place for you.

Harts does strive to have a beer from every segment, rather than some craft beer places that stock only pale ale craft during the summer months and stout and porter during the winter ones. I think this is important as, it may be a hot day outside, but there’s usually air conditioning in bars so, why offer only summer ales? I mostly drink wine, though if my only choice is beer, then I’d prefer it to be a complex, thick, black porter or stout. Something I can get my teeth into. While not quite the black beer I’m looking for (there aren’t that many out there that are) The Butcher’s Porter is still pretty good and is my choice when I’m at The Harts Pub.

“Local artisan beers plus gourmet burgers and grills in an old-style corner pub with a courtyard.”

Harts also has some tasty treats on the menu for a reasonable price. From beer battered chips, crunchy onion rings and salt and pepper calamari to burgers, salmon, steak and pie, Harts has an amazing pub food selection, for a pub! We tried the onion rings and the salt and pepper squid, and were very happy with how they came out. Definitely ideal to enjoy with a tasting paddle.

Harts does its best to straddle the divide between a basic sports pub and a craft beer bar. As a result of this, they’re the only ones doing it, and the place tends to be packed with people newly discovering craft beer.

Definitely try Harts pub if you’re a beginner in the craft beer scene and wish to try the wine of beer!
